Discover Your Drive is a new global initiative by F1 Academy to increase the female talent pool in motorsport. The initiative aims to give girls and young women the opportunity to take part in entry-level programmes and professional schemes. The first talent identification programme, F1
Academy Discover Your Drive Karting UK, will be operated by Motorsport UK and TeamSport Karting. It will address the disparity between male and female participation in motorsport by acting as a gateway for young girls into the sport. The programme also aims to remove barriers that often inhibit girls from competing.
In 2024, F1 Academy Discover Your Drive will run activations around the world prior to each race with workshops and activities aimed at inspiring local communities of 8-18 year-old girls about a future in motorsport.
Will Discover Your Drive give us what F1 Academy was lacking?
One of the major concerns to have with F1 Academy was that it didn’t focus enough on grassroot level competitions in order to create a larger pool of talented female drivers who could potentially reach F1. Unless more money was put into the foundation of motorsport, such as karting or racing for those under 14 years old, F1 would continue to struggle to find female drivers, as F1 Academy would struggle too. That’s exactly why F1 Academy’s new initiative, Discover Your Drive, is the perfect antidote to the issue. By offering girls and young women entry-level programmes and professional schemes to promote female participation in motorsport, this programme may be able to do a better job in actively addressing the underlying cause of the gender gap within motorsports.
With Discover Your Drive Karting UK as well as other activities around the world providing workshops and activities for girls aged 8-18, it will make them more aware of the opportunities available while also removing some barriers that may have been hindering them from competing before. This initiative has great potential for sustainable growth – if successful, we can expect more initiatives like this one to come out of F1 Academy which will benefit female racing talent greatly by offering guidance and support throughout their journey towards Formula 1.

Understanding the core of Discover Your Drive
In order to get a better grasp of the core of this new initiative, it is important to understand what F1’s
Academy Discover Your Drive stands for. Its four pillars are listed as Youth Engagement, Talent Identification, Participation & Progression and Community when the programme was first being introduced.
The Youth Engagement pillar seeks to raise awareness of motorsport as a career option by holding events before the Grand Prix races that provide education and access to activities encouraging young girls and women to explore opportunities in motorsport. These meetings will help break down preconceptions about women in motor sport that may cause exclusion or lack of interest.
The Talent Identification pillar is dedicated to increasing female representation within motorsport through training, including investing deeper into karting so that emerging talent can be spotted sooner and have increased resources available for development. Being able to select the correct talent within a pool of female motorsports enthusiasts is one of the biggest parts of Discover Your Drive.
Its Participation & Progression pillar aims to provide equal opportunity and access to resources for those who decide to participate, enabling entry-level programmes for people from all backgrounds. Finally, via its Community pillar, F1 Academy wants to hold local activities that encourage girls aged 8-18 with fun activities based around learning – such as workshops – while promoting equality by providing visibility and opportunity for under-represented groups like women. In turn this helps create more sustainable growth socially in the sport overall across generations which gradually breaks down barriers preventing them from taking part in competition.

Why do they start with karting?
The simple answer would be, because everyone else does! By focusing primarily on karting, F1 Academy acknowledges this as a crucial moment to create a successful pipeline of talent in motorsport, especially with Motorsport UK reporting that only 5% of race license holders in their organization are female. Karting is considered a gateway sport to motorsports as it levels the playing field with no special equipment or skill required. The inclusion of indoor karting is also beneficial due to its availability and accessibility across TeamSport Karting’s 35 venues. This provides more opportunity for young girls and women to increase their exposure to competitive motorsport at an early age without ever having been involved before.
Lack of broadcasting is still a major handicap
One thing that gets frequently highlighted by the Managing Director of F1 Academy, Susie Wolff, is that “If you can’t see it, you can’t believe it.” Thus, they put extra efforts into making their actions to create a more equal motorsport environment more visible for the masses.
However, the lack of a platform to broadcast F1 Academy races makes it difficult to expose younger girls to the sport, as they may be less aware of an event’s existence and thus not able to become motivated and inspired by it. The lack of online visibility also makes it more difficult for the series to gain recognition worldwide, taking away potential sponsorships and partnerships that could help with the growth of the series.

For many young girls, one of their primary sources of knowledge often comes from seeing someone who looks like them (or acts like them) achieving something in their respective field. Likewise, F1 Academy is offering an opportunity for girls all over the world who are passionate about motorsports but lack the resources or confidence to pursue it. Without being able to visibly see other girls participating in F1-level events on a wide platform such as traditional broadcast television or online streaming sites, fewer people will be drawn towards pursuing this type of activity.
In short, while F1 Academy has started its presence with a solid action plan and offers great programmes for young women looking into starting a career within motorsport those efforts can only do so much without proper exposure on large platforms; exposing these talents requires visibility in order for both fans and sponsors alike too see what progress has been made and inspiring others to take that same journey with those already involved.
